“But when you have all the noises, and you have the odors, and the flies, and everything else going on as well … And then you can’t even get up out of bed, like that one night when I was making different sounds …”

“You were making different sounds?” I interrupted. This, along with being able to speak a language not previously known … or talk backwards is one of the hallmarks of possession.

“I was making a noise that seemed like a physical impossibility. I made two distinct unnatural sounds from my mouth. I was awake and sitting up in bed when this happened. It was like more than one wild creature was inside of me.”

“That doesn’t sound good,” I admitted. “Would it be too personal a question, George, to ask you how much you lost by leaving that home and never returning? Your family’s clothing, personal items, valuables collected and handed down from generations were all left behind. You never went back to get those. Is that correct?”

“Yes, but to answer that question I would have to look at two parts,” George said. “One part would be the down payment on the house itself, and our being unable to wait for the best time to market the motorcycles and our two boats. We had just bought a speedboat, which we had never even used. I had three custom choppers—each bike was very valuable … fully chromed and custom painted. I also had recently converted my motorcycle trailer so it could carry motorcycles as well as tools.

“The second part of the loss was my business. We sold the business just to get away from everything and to get out. Anyone who knew what the business was worth couldn’t refuse it. Its market value was entirely different from what it was sold at.

“Regarding the house, the bank put $40,000 in escrow. Kathy and I put a down payment of $20,000. The closing fees and everything came to an additional $8,000. So, we put down $28,000 altogether, which we lost when we walked away from the house.”

I pushed for a total number. “When I asked you earlier how much you thought you lost when you fled the house, you agreed it was around $100,000, is that correct?”

“Easily, that amount,” George confirmed. “What does that have to do with anything, though?”

“Well as you know, some people claim you created a hoax. People don’t lose 100k trying to create a hoax,” I offered.

“When Kathy and I moved in, we got a mortgage. At the time, it was hard to get a mortgage for any kind of house on Long Island. Nonetheless, we qualified for a mortgage on an $80,000 house with almost $3,000 a year in taxes. We were very happy with it and the house. We didn’t have any problem figuring out how to afford it and still be able to save. I was planning to move my business there. Previously, Kathy and I had been keeping up two houses—one in East Cypress and one in Deer Park, whose values came very close to the Amityville house.
